To develop, through a study of both classical and contemporary writings, a philosophical understanding of the so-called "liberal tradition" which exercised an enormous influence on the American Revolution and the development of American constitutional democracy, and to develop a reasonable assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the current challenge to the basic principles of this tradition.
