The first phase of this project will be an exegesis of the symbol of "Jerusalem" as it came to predominate in the life of England in the 16th and 17th centuries, and an investigation of the intellectual background that produced such a multiplicity of approaches to the understanding and implementation of the symbol. This will be followed by a short paper outlining the relationship between aspects of Religious Studies in the modern period and similar intellectual enquiries (especially enquiries into myth) in the period of the Renaissance and Reformation.
