To focus attention on aspects of Western American History to historians who are primarily concerned with humanistic traditions and ideals. Topics to be considered are environmental policy related to an appreciation of natural resources; the role of racial minorities in the West; a reconsideration of Western stereotypes; order and violence on the frontier; the urban West; and comparative frontier experiences in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
