To explore the English grammatical tradition from 1586 to the present as a humane study. The seminar will attempt to reconcile the discrepancies between scientific approaches to language teaching and humanistic approaches to literature teaching; and to use traditional grammar as a perspective from which to examine the contributions and the role of linguistics.
