Intellectuals in Culture and Society

The first part of the seminar will deal with intellectuals as creators and transmitters of culture: 1) the role of intellectuals in the creation and transmission of intellectual works, art, literature, and scientific and other beliefs, 2) the perpetuation and modification of traditions, 3) how intellectual institutions and communities affect the substance and destinies of intellectual works. The second part will deal with intellectuals as participants in the greater society: 1) social sources of intellectuals, 2) economic role of intellectuals, 3) role of intellectuals in gov't, 4) political attitudes and roles of intellectuals.
