The Revolutionary Ideals of Republicanism and Democracy in Post-Revolutionary France

Study concerning the fate of the revolutionary ideals of republicanism and democracy in France during the period of the Bourbon Restoration (1814-30). Fellow's previous research indicates that the impolitic and often brutal behavior of the Jacobin party during the French Revolution did great harm to the republican and democratic ideals that they professed, and probably delayed the final acceptance of these ideals by the politically active classes in France. During the years of the Bourbon Restoration, even the most radical students were often suspicious of the very ideas that their fathers had cherished. Expansion of fellow's doctoral dissertation; to be submitted to Duke University Press for publication. Fellow hopes eventually to produce a study of the fate of revolutionary ideals in several different countries and different centuries.
