ABSTRACT: Fellow to study the early 14th century stained glass of the abbey of Evron (Mayenne), France: 1) its documentation in contemporary records; 2) its subject matter; 3) its style; 4) its relationship to other monuments in France in the gothic era. The windows portray "medieval life in microcosm"--the saints are local ones, the donors local families or individuals. Reveals a provincial view of the middle ages very different from that of centers such as Paris and Reims. Fellow has studied fragments of Evron windows in American collections; will study other fragments in Europe, the bulk of which are at Evron, and will conduct research in historic records in the Paris archives.
