To study the background, course, and results of the Great Awakening of the 1740s in one community, Grafton, Massachusetts. To reconstruct and analyze the town of Grafton, its church and people and activities of their minister, Solomon Prentice, one of the the New Lights who sought fundamental changes in the established religion and were denounced both by Old Light opponents of the Awakening and by moderate New Lights.
