To study the "sophisticated" American as reflected in the literature of Benjamin Franklin and Henry James. The investigation also involves the fields of musicology, art, aesthetics, international relations, and European history. For example, interest in Benjamin Franklin goes beyond the areas of American history and literature; he was the composer of a pair of string quartets while he was American minister to France. Henry James lived in France for a time and his interests lay in art and literature. His knowledge of and interest in French culture is reflected in his works, specifically The Ambassadors.
