To approach the affinities between American literature and the Bible synchronically, treating American literature as an accumulated "canon" of literary works functioning contemporaneously to fulfill the complex and contrasting literary needs of our complex culture. In this study, the Bible functions less as an influence, and more as a model of the way various form of literary expression interact with Jewish religious perception.
