To investigate the artistic features of the Dutch emblem books, a pictorial literary genre, and their relationship to Dutch genre painting of the era; the allegorical and realistic motives used in the emblem books; the interrelationship of the emblematic pictures with the Dutch, and often polyglot, verses; and cultural and social aspects of the origin and production of these emblem books.
