From Old City to New: Adaptation of Harari Urban Institutions

To study the adaptation to modern urban conditions of an ethnic group already provided with distinctively African urban institutions - the Harari of Harar, Ethiopia, one-third of whom have migrated to Addis Ababa since I960. The goal of research is to document changes in the traditional institutions of the Harari and to analyze their role in adapting the Harari to the environment of a modern city. Research will be based on extensive interviews, participant - observation and inspection of documents.
