To collect data from the Mountain aborigines of Taiwan and Lanyu Island concerning the swidden cultivation of foxtail millet and hill rice. The energy outputs and crop yields will be compared to the irrigated taro fields of the Yami and current paddy fields of the aborigines in an attempt to substantiate or to clarify hypotheses concerning the evolution of farming systems in Asia. PI will also record the autobiographies of two old Bunun informants who accurately recollect old beliefs and values which functioned to codify the swidden cycle of foxtail millet cultivation.
