To study the conflict between Washington, the aloof Virginia aristocrat and critic of over-familiarity between officers and enlisted men, and Gates, the folksy democrat and champion of short-term militia who personified New England expansionist demands. PI will study both the character and motivation of Washington and Gates and thus illuminate the problems of leadership rivalry, civilian-military relationships, and popular tensions both during the Revolution and after.
