Milton and the Unity of Knowledge: "True Wisdom" or "Children Gathering Pebbles on the Shore"

To assess the inventive art of reading and integrated thinking as demonstrated in Milton's epics, Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. PI will make a general bibliographical survey of the problem of knowledge, will examine primary materials at Newberry, Boston Public, Folger, and other libraries, and will then analyze the epics with a view towards exposing Milton's understanding of the multiplicity and the unity of knowledge and his prescription for the problem of the diversification of knowledge.
