FAIN: FT-13927-78

Nancy L. Maull
Yale University (New Haven, CT 06510-1703)

To study the optical writings of Thomas Hobbes, including several still unpublished manuscripts. PI hopes to find answers to several key questions concerning the role Hobbes attributed to optics in the foundations of modern science: questions about the mechanistic interpretation of mental phenomena (like pain) , about the distinction between passions and actions, and about the evidential weight of data gathered through introspection.
