To begin a critical edition of the Protestatio of Alberto Pio (1475-1531) with a historical introduction and notes. Study will attempt to determine the reasons for the extended revisions in the Protestatio (based on the collation of the emended scribal draft kept in the Vatican Library with the finished copy sent by Pio to the Emperor Maximilian which is preserved in the Staatsarchiv in Vienna). The Protestatio was a formal protest which was lodged in 1513 by the imperial ambassador to the 5th Lateran Council (1512-17) against the mandate of the French representative Claude de Seyssel and was excluded from the official acts of the Council.
