To write a major biography of Martin Luther King, Jr., demonstrating how he developed from a regional black leader struggling against racism in the South to an international moral spokesman. Based on exhaustive research in all pertinent published and unpublished sources and many interviews the grantee's book will attempt to explain this prodigious and complex man.
