Anna O. Marley (Project Director: January 2016 to November 2017)

Planning for a traveling exhibition and a catalog that explores how national identity was expressed through 19th-century history paintings in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) requests a $75,000 NEH MLCO one-year planning grant to aid planning of the exhibition and related educational programs for Marcando Historia/Making History in the Americas, 1840-1893, at PAFA in November 2019, and traveling to at least one additional US venue and at least one international venue. The project will include primary research by curator/project director Anna Marley in Latin America, preliminary audience research focusing in particular on programming for Latino communities in Philadelphia, and meetings in Philadelphia convening program partners, educational experts, community organizers, and scholars. Other project staff will include 2 PAFA museum education staffers and a temporary curatorial assistant fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese to assist with communication with Latin American contacts.
