Study of 19th Century Prostitution in Rochester, New York

FAIN: GY-10215-74

Florence Bartoshesky
University of Rochester (Rochester, NY 14627-0001)

To locate city, county, and state documents which will allow researchers to explore the lives of "anonymous Americans" in the 19th century and to construct a collective biography of prostitutes in Rochester, New York and Manhattan in the 1860s and 70s. To answer the question whether women chose this occupation because of its flexible life style in a Victorian culture, or whether lack of skills and few female job opportunities foced them to it.
