Seneca Nation of Indians (Salamanca, NY 14779-0231)
Joe Stahlman (Project Director: January 2021 to September 2023)
Hayden Haynes (Project Director: September 2023 to March 2025)

A general preservation assessment and training workshops designed for museum staff and Seneca youth for a collection of approximately 3,500 books, journals, manuscripts, audiovisual recordings, postcards, and photographs chronicling the history, culture, and legacy of the Seneca/Haudenosaunee people. This collection complements the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum’s larger collection of over one million objects, one of the largest collections under the care of an Indigenous community, and covers nearly all aspects of Seneca material culture and expressed knowledge. Having recently moved to a larger cultural center, the museum offers exhibits and educational programming such as lectures, cultural presentations, and events for children to nearly 15,000 visitors annually.

The SINM Non-Traditional Artifacts Project will engage the services of a consultant who is conversant with the preservation of less traditional Seneca objects, including books, journals, manuscripts, prints, photographs, moving images, and sound recordings in order to better preserve this significant segment of the SINM's collections.

Safeguarding and preserving our written/printed heritage (Public Lecture or Presentation)
Title: Safeguarding and preserving our written/printed heritage
Abstract: The NEH grant-funded Non-Traditional Artifacts Project will have two public components, a presentation, and a hands-on workshop. The illustrated presentation is open to all and will inform participants about the conservation and preservation of a wide range of materials found in archives, museums, and libraries such as archival documents, drawings, art on paper, photographs, other paper-based objects, and cultural objects. The hands-on workshop will allow the participants to see and experience handling a wide range of materials such as old documents and photographic albums, old bibles, and damaged works of art on paper, books, and objects found in archives, libraries, and museums.
