To assemble a preliminary but detailed study built around the Harvard Semitic Museum's collection of 19th century photographs of the Near East and related materials from collections around the world. The pilot program's result will be a Listing of such photographs in U.S. collections; about 5,000 copy negatives collected from European and Near Eastern sources; and a plan for a comprehensive archive.
