To produce a translated annotated and introduced critical edition of one of the most important medieval Russian chronicles, the Nikonian Codex. Together with other manuscripts, the Codex offers an uninterrupted presentation of Russian history from its earliest times to 1558. The latest edition of the Codex, published in the Soviet Union in 1965, consisted of 1,400 pages.
