To translate Jules Laforgue's (1860-1887) Moral Tales and Berlin, the City and the Court. These essays have a special interest for anyone concerned with the verbal texture and use of myth in Joyce, with the works of T. S. Eliot and with Impressionist art. Laforgue, a poet and artist, strongly influenced Joyce. He was also the first to make a serious attempt to analyze the forces that coalesced in t the Impressionist movement. His own preoccupations nurtured such figures as Apollinaire who in turn inspired painters such as Picasso.
