Walter Arndt (Project Director: February 1978 to October 1990)
To produce the first English verse translation of Pushkin's major dramatic poem, Poltava (1828), with suitable introduction and annotation. The poem as published is ca. 1,400 lines in length and organized in three cantos or poetic acts: the themes of political, ideological and romantic struggle are interwoven in this evocation of the struggle for a modern balance of power in Eastern Europe between Russia, the Ukraine, Sweden and Poland. The image of the era Pushkin captured has irreversibly become part of his society's self-understanding through its impact on historian and on the public mind.
