A TRANSLATION AND STUDY OF NICHOLAS OF CUSA'S MAJOR TREATISE, DE DOCTA IGNORAN.

FAIN: RL-*1084-78

University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN 55455-2009)
Jasper Hopkins (Project Director: February 1978 to October 1990)

To translate Nicholas of Cusa's major intellectual achievement, De Docta Ignorantia (On Learned Ignorance). This text is crucial to the understanding of that transitional period of the Renaissance which led from Scholastic philosophy to the "Modern" school of Giordano Bruno and Copernicus. The metaphysical background of the work has been widely misunderstood, and these speculative origins of physical theory will be clarified in the English translation. Also included will be translations of the attack on Nicholas by Johannes Wenck (De Ignoto Litteratura) together with Nicholas's reply (Apologia Docta Ignorantia). This debate sheds important light upon Nicholas's intent in the philosophical program in De Docta Ignorantia.
