The main purpose of the project is to produce an English translation, with introduction and commentary, of the History of Vardan by the early Armenian historian Elishe. The book describes the revolt of the Armenians in the mid-fifth century A.D. against their Iranian overlords in an attempt to gain religious freedom. The introduction will discuss the symbolic role of Vardan in Armenian life from the fifth century to the present day. The result of the project will be a monograph.
