The primary text contains 752 pieces of prose and verse by 129 Chinese writers covering the period from the third century B.C. to the sixth century A.D. It represents the best examples of a wide variety of early Chinese literary genres. The translation of the work is intended to provide informative annotations that enable the reader to understand the cultural implications, biases, and hidden assumptions of the work it contains.
