A computer-assisted analysis describing the significance in three Eastern European peasant communities of larger-than-household social groups. This research will widen the scope of social and cultural history studies, since for the first time data will be collected not only for nuclear families, hut for systems of relationships encompassing either subunits of the population or the whole population. A better empirical basis for theories about change from pre-modernity to modernity will result.
