To trace the origins of the change in the European mood from the (relative) confidence of the 1960s to the pessimism of the 1970s and to analyze the main trends that are commonly believed to have caused it. These trends are: The economic recession; social imbalances; the weakness of political institutions; the erosion of the European idea, the reassertion of nationalist and separatist movements; Eurocommunism; and worldwide cultural crisis and ecological malaise. Study will provide a critical review of those trends and the 'crisis debate'.
