To write a factual but speculative account of the literary-intellectual culture of New York during the last five decades. Personal experience as well as the central events of the period will be examined, drawing upon the author's memories and correspondence, and the journals of opinion in which the dominant and dissident movements of intellectual politics and culture were voiced.
