Paul Kleppner (Project Director: August 1977 to October 1990)

To support a research project that explores the significant changes in voter turnout and partisanship that occured between 1893-1930 in R.I. and the implications for the current low level of voter turnout in that state.

To conduct a study of mass voting behavior during the U.S.'s fourth- electoral era, 1893-1933. Electoral and demographic data will be used to measure the general contours of the turnout decline that the period saw. Substantive findings will be used by political and social historians, policy makers and political scientists and sociologists. Subcounty voting and social data will also be of use to demographers, geographers and economic historians.
