To write a book depicting musical life in New York City during the middle fifty years of the 19th century. The evolution of the music world during this period, and its attendant cultural and social implications, is thoroughly documented in the voluminous diaries of two avid music lovers, Philip Hone (1828-1851) and George Templeton Strong (1835-1875). This work will make accessible the wealth of information recorded by these two men, as well as similarly neglected musical reportage in newspapers, periodicals and other sources.
