To investigate the popular art of the periurban area near Lusaka, Zaire as a form of cultural expression and adaptation. Art forms are now produced for tourists, and represent an expanding source of independent livelihood. A scholarly monograph will examine how the works of art reflect the artists' interpretations of their culture as they wish it to be perceived by outsiders. Conceptual and social relationships can be traced through a comparison of traditional and contemporary workers' categorizations of different people in society. Visual media will be used in the study as well.
