As a continuation of the Islamic Society and the West project, this study will examine the modernization of the Ottoman Empire, including Southeastern Asia, Anatolia, and the Arab World, during this last quarter century, the Young Turk era (1908-1918), the period of World War I and the Turkish War for Independence (1918-1923) and of the Turkish Republic during the presidency of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (1923-1939). Turkish and French National archives will be used.
