Morroe Berger (Project Director: May 1977 to October 1990)

The purpose of the grant is to study the career of Benny Carter, an important and versatile composer, arranger, conductor, and instrumentalist in the jazz medium. Through Carter's career, the overall project will treat social and musicological aspects of jazz in relation to culture, public taste, and the music industry. For this phase of the project, funding will support development of a complete discography, finalization of all research and analysis, the planning of a book, and the writing of a first draft of the entire text.
