To trace the development, and activities and patterns of behavior of Chinese secret societies. These societies which have been in existence since the beginning of the Christian era have had a mixed effect on their culture. On the bright side they contributed to the overthrow of the Yuan and Ch’ing dynasties. On the dark side, they have committed so many crimes that they have been considered social cancers.
