To support a two phase comprehensive history of the Bennington Summer School of the Dance (1934-1947). Phase I will be an Oral History of the Summer School which will include interviews with Graham, Cunningham and others. This material will furnish a solid foundation of source material for the written history of the summer school which is phase 2 of this project. This written history will seek to exhibit the contribution that the Bennington Summer School of the Dance has made to the development of modern dance. Through the investigation of the peculiar alchemy of artistic skill, personality, and historical "ripeness."
