To initiate a systematic study by 5 scholars of the contribution of political rhetoric to Presidential leadership. NEH funds will support 5 studies on rhetoric. 1 scholar will focus on the relationship of political rhetoric to statesmanship in classical political thought. This work will provide the theoretical framework for the 4 other studies, 3 of which will be specific historical case studies of presidential rhetoric each an analysis of one of the constituent elements of rhetoric-the speaker, the institutional setting and the nature of the audience. The 4th will analyze the purpose and role of Presidential rhetoric.
