Project to collect and analyze parallels between literature of Ugarit and Hebrew Bible. ABSTRACT: Project to collect and analyze parallels between literature of Ugarit and Hebrew Bible. Ugarit was major cosmopolitan center of East Mediterranean world in modern Syria. Excavations of city have unearthed clay tablets, dating 1500-1200 B.C. Project to compare literary motifs, phrases, formulae, structures; geographic, personal, divine names, technical terms found in these works with those in Bible. Ugaritic works identified in period and region, unlike Bible which was handed down through generations with additions and modifications. Cast new lights on relgious history and interpretation. Helps identify genre and period of parts of Bible, verification of historical data. Provides research tool from historians and theologians.
