Wester African Griots: A Study of the Art of Wolof and Mandingo Traditional Bards of Senegal and Gambia

To collect, transcribe, translate and analyze oral performances by Wolof and Mandingo griots in four rural centers of Senegal and Gambia, as well as in urban centers of Dakar and Bathurst where a few can be found in recording and broadcasting industries. To conduct interviews in order to isolate the criteria by which the art of a griot is tradtionally assessed and to evaluate the contrast the role and place of the griot in Wolof and Mandingo socieiteis.
