Who profited in rural India from railway development, and what were the effects of new wealth on small town society? This project will seek answers to these questions through research in the social history of Eastern India--the rural hinterland of Calcutta--in the period 1850-1950. A major aim will be to test some widely accepted hypotheses regarding changes in social organization and value systems which accompany modernization.
