Preparation for print publication of Volume 11, tome 2 (the final volume) of the journals and notebooks of the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), an English-language version of his unpublished writings. (12 months)

An international group of well-known scholars of philosophy, history, and religious studies is producing a critical, scholarly, English-language edition of the unpublished writings of the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855). These writings, collectively entitled Kierkegaard’s Journals and Notebooks, are being published in 12 volumes by Princeton University Press. The first nine volumes have now been published; volume 10 is in production and will be available in April 2018, while volume 11, tome 1, will be finished by the end of the current grant period in the fall of 2018. With the requested grant, we will complete Volume 11, tome 2--and the entire project--by September 30, 2019. Approximately 50% of the project’s costs are being borne by a major grant from the Danish government, with Connecticut College also providing significant support. Kierkegaard’s Journals and Notebooks will be the benchmark for all future Kierkegaard scholarship in the English language.

Abstract: Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813–55) has long been at the center of important discussions in philosophy and theology and more recently, in social thought, psychology, aesthetics, and literary theory. Despite his short life, Kierkegaard was a prolific writer. The Princeton University Press edition of all of his published writings numbers 26 volumes. But he left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of what are called his “journals and notebooks.” Only small portions of these are “diaries.” The greater part of Kierkegaard’s journals and notebooks consists of reflections on many subjects—philosophical, religious, political, personal. His journals and notebooks reflect his entire universe of thought, the genesis of his published works, concepts, new insights, and fragments of partially (or almost entirely) completed but unpublished works. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for initial entries and the second for comments added later. This edition reproduces this format, includes several photographs of original manuscript pages, and contains extensive scholarly commentary on the entries and on the history of the manuscripts reproduced. Volume 11, Part 1 presents papers that were found, carefully sorted and stored by Kierkegaard himself, in his apartment after his death. These papers, many of which have never before been published in English, provide a window into Kierkegaard’s life and creativity from his formative years, through his studies at the university, and up to the publication of Either/Or. Include are his studies in biblical exegesis; his reading of theologians such as Schleiermacher and Baader; his concern with aesthetic matters; a consideration of the Faust legend; his first, trial sermon, delivered at the Pastoral Seminary; his views on political journalism in the 1830s; and a group of papers he titled “The First Rudiments of Either/Or. The Green Book. Some Particulars that were not Used.”
