Judith Gentry (Project Director: August 1977 to October 1990)

To conduct an in-depth historical study of the Acadian region of southwestern Louisiana, an area settled by Acadians in the eighteenth century and still heavily influenced by its French heritage. The study will focus on the period from 1765 to the Civil War: its social structure, economic factors and demography, with special attention paid to the evolution of the slave trade. Church and colonial census records will be the primary documents used in the project, which will result in a book-length economic and social history of Acadiana.
