To write a definitive history of the 350-year old town of Rockport, which has been a microcosm of the American experiment. National changes have been reflected in the constantly changing nature of Rockport's industry, and its role in transportation. From timber to fish to granite to recreation and artistic culture, the small town has built a complex role and world renowned for its talented residents. But other aspects of Rockport reflect the more common American experience: wholehearted military sacrifice, and the arrival of successive waves of groups and their gradual assimilation into the decidedly Yankee tradition of Rockport.
