PUEBLO DE JEMEZ HISTORY PROJECT

FAIN: RS-*0342-78

Joe S. Sando
Unaffiliated independent scholar

To research and develop an analytical narrative history of the Jemez Pueblo Indian tribe of New Mexico, the only Pueblo tribe with its own dialect. No popular and significant book has been written, and no account by a member of the tribe fluent in its language and familiar with its oral history has ever appeared before. The book will start with pre- Columbian migration oral stories and follow the movement of the tribe to the successive sites it has occupied. The book will be a partial response to the growing demand for books written by Indians with Indian viewpoints of their history.
