The Development of Society in the Coloni al Chesapeake

To study social and economic developments from the 1630's to the Revolution in those areas of Virginia and Maryland dependent at some time upon tobacco as a staple crop. The study will be based on probate inventories and accounts and accompanying biographical data for 10,000 inhabitants from countries chosen for their differing dates of settlement and varying success with tobacco as the foundation their economies.
