To annotate, index and ready for publication a 250-page illustrated edition of the 1835 Journal of William C. Holgate, which records his trip from Utica, New York to Huntington, Indiana, via the Erie Canal and Lake Erie, along the Maumee River and the Wabash and Erie Canal. Attention will be focused on the Maumee River settlement period. The influence of the Erie Canal, U.S. Indian policy, the movement westward and the presence of Eastern land speculators will be illuminated.
