Analysis and Classification of State Historical Writing

To identify, examine, analyze, and classify the scholarly literature in the history of the fifty states. To "map" this huge but badly fragmented field and to provide an analytical framework which compares the histories of all the states. To provide an overview of the development of state historical studies and show how research in this area has been influenced by histographical concepts and trends in other fields of American history. Results will be published in a book-length essay with critical bibliography.
