To prepare for publication over one million linguistic responses from 1,211 natives of 512 communities in Middle and South Atlantic states. This survey of regional speech completes the survey of the Eastern Seaboard begun in 1931. This data also forms a base for studies of the mechanisms of linguistic change and of the covariation of linguistic and social structure.
